Alumina (Al2O3
or Aluminum Oxide)
Alumina, one of the oldest technical ceramics, remains one of the most common still in use. Alumina, thoroughly documented since the 1920's, is an industry standard to which many other ceramic materials are compared. Many of the OEM ceramic parts Ceramco manufactures for its customers are made from alumina because of its desirable properties, including:
- Chemical inertness
- Resistance to high wear
- Resistance to thermal conductivity
- Resistance to electrical conductivity
Alumina – Versatile, Desirable and Abundant
Ceramco offers numerous alumina-based formulations for its OEM ceramic parts satisfying a wide range of customer requirements and applications. Various alumina grades and alumina purities in both porous and non-porous varieties are available. The short list of OEM ceramic applications for alumina includes:
- Refractories
- Abrasives
- Instrumentation
- Lab ware
- Bio-medical devices
- Coatings
Alumina’s most notable characteristics are its high hardness and dielectric constant. These characteristics make alumina ideal for customer applications subject to high wear and/or low electric loss. At Ceramco, this includes the manufacture of sensor caps, casings and scientific crucibles. A third characteristic of alumina: high mechanical stability, makes it the right choice for many other applications.
Approximately 45 million tons of alumina is produced annually making it one of the most abundant ceramic materials on the market. The abundance and versatility of alumina can often result in a material cost savings for Ceramco customers when compared to other materials. Alumina is not the ideal candidate, however, for every Ceramco customers' OEM part. The materials selection process is complex and Ceramco is an expert. Ceramco also offers numerous zirconia formulations, silicon nitride (Si3N4), as well as user defined materials, satisfying almost any OEM ceramic parts requirement.
