Bisque Processing
To "bisque" a ceramic component refers to an initial (yet incomplete) firing in the kiln to a rigid, yet chalky, state. This resultant partially fired ceramic component can be referred to as a "bisque," "brown body," "green body" or "semi-fired."
Ceramco combines it all into a single term: Bisque Processing. Ceramco manufactures both OEM ceramic parts and stock ceramic fasteners, often encompassing the full spectrum of all the meanings of "bisque." Bisque Processing includes green machining and wet grinding operations of ceramic components.
More than Green Machining and Wet Grinding
Bisque processing utilizes tool steel cutters, whereas a fully fired ceramic component requires diamond impregnated cutters . Bisque processing also includes fettling (hand sanding) to remove tooling parting lines or mold flash. In this context, fettling is a delicate and careful process step of smoothing, blending, and grooming surfaces.
When necessary, the hand sanding of a bisque is a cost effective, versatile method for removing sharp corners, edges, or flash from complex-shaped, partially-fired ceramic components. Bisque processing often eliminates the need for more costly precision machining or grinding.
At Ceramco, bisque processing is an important step in a ceramic component’s evolution from feedstock to a near-net shape for our LPIM, HPIM, microPIM and additive manufacturing forming process methods for virtually any quantity of OEM ceramic parts.
People Making it Happen
At Ceramco, the making of a OEM ceramic part requires thorough documentation and constant attention to detail. This attention cannot be more evident than it is in bisque processing. The knowledge of knowing when to stop the firing process and the skill to accurately and efficiently machine, or hand sand delicate parts, all rest with Ceramco’s highly skilled staff.
